In Christianity, an altar is a place of worship, prayer, sacrifice, dedication, and communion with God. It is a place where believers meet God, seek His face, and receive spiritual strength. The altar may be in a church, a prayer ground, or even a personal prayer altar in your home where you consistently worship God.
Many believers today move from one church, prophet, prayer house, or spiritual center to another seeking quick solutions to their problems. While God can work through different ministers and churches, constantly jumping from one altar to another without spiritual direction can bring confusion, instability, and spiritual weakness.
What Does the Bible Say About Altars?
Genesis 12:7-8
> “And the Lord appeared unto Abram… and there builded he an altar unto the Lord.”
Abraham built altars wherever God appeared to him. These altars represented his covenant relationship with God.
Genesis 13:4
> “Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first.”
Abraham returned to the altar where he first met God. He did not keep running around; he maintained his relationship with God.
1 Corinthians 14:33
> “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”
God desires order, stability, and spiritual growth in the lives of His children.
WHY YOU SHOULD STICK TO ONE GODLY ALTAR
1. It Helps You Grow Spiritually
When you remain under sound biblical teaching and spiritual guidance, your faith grows steadily.
Ephesians 4:14
> “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro.”
A believer who is always moving around spiritually may struggle to mature in faith.
2. It Builds Spiritual Stability
A tree that is constantly uprooted cannot grow strong roots.
Psalm 92:13
> “Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish.”
God blesses those who are planted and committed.
3. It Strengthens Your Relationship with God
Consistency in worship, prayer, and fellowship deepens your walk with God.
James 4:8
> “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
4. It Allows Proper Spiritual Covering
God places spiritual leaders over His people for guidance and accountability.
Hebrews 13:17
> “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves.”
DANGERS OF JUMPING FROM ONE ALTAR TO ANOTHER
1. Spiritual Confusion
Different teachings and doctrines may create confusion.
Ephesians 4:14
> “Carried about with every wind of doctrine.”
When you follow every new voice, you may lose focus on God’s truth.
2. Lack of Spiritual Growth
People who are always searching for new miracles often neglect spiritual maturity.
Instead of growing roots, they keep changing locations.
3. Exposure to False Teachings
Not every altar is ordained by God.
Matthew 24:24
> “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets.”
Some altars are built on manipulation, deception, and false doctrines.
4. Loss of Spiritual Direction
Constant movement can make it difficult to hear God’s voice clearly.
Proverbs 3:5-6
> “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.”
5. Financial and Emotional Exploitation
Some people spend all their money moving from one prophet to another, seeking instant solutions.
Jeremiah 17:5
> “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man.”
Our trust should be in God first.
CAN JUMPING FROM ONE ALTAR TO ANOTHER CAUSE PROBLEMS?
Yes, when it is done out of fear, desperation, lack of faith, or the pursuit of quick miracles rather than God’s guidance.
It can lead to:
Spiritual confusion
Doubt and unbelief
Wrong counsel
Financial losses
Emotional frustration
Loss of focus on God
Exposure to false prophets
However, the real issue is not changing churches when there is a legitimate reason. The issue is seeking spiritual power everywhere without discernment or commitment to God’s truth.
ADVANTAGES OF A GODLY ALTAR
1. Divine Presence
Exodus 20:24
> “In all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.”
2. Spiritual Growth
A faithful altar helps believers mature spiritually.
3. Consistent Prayer Life
An altar becomes a place of regular fellowship with God.
4. Deliverance and Breakthrough
God answers prayers offered in faith.
Jeremiah 33:3
> “Call unto me, and I will answer thee.”
5. Divine Direction
God speaks and guides His people.
Psalm 32:8
> “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.”
DISADVANTAGES OF AN UNGODLY ALTAR
The Bible warns against altars dedicated to idols or practices that oppose God.
1. Spiritual Bondage
Judges 6:25 God instructed Gideon to destroy his father’s altar of Baal.
2. Separation from God
False worship distances people from God’s presence.
3. Confusion and Fear
Ungodly altars produce instability rather than peace.
4. Delayed Spiritual Growth
Wrong foundations affect spiritual progress.
THE SOLUTION
1. Build a Personal Prayer Altar
Spend time daily in prayer and Bible study.
Matthew 6:6
> “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet.”
2. Follow a Bible-Believing Church
Stay where the Word of God is faithfully preached.
3. Seek God’s Guidance Before Moving
Pray before making spiritual decisions.
4. Study the Scriptures
Know God’s Word for yourself.
2 Timothy 2:15
> “Study to shew thyself approved unto God.”
5. Trust God, Not Just Miracles
Seek the Miracle Giver more than miracles.
Matthew 6:33
> “Seek ye first the kingdom of God.”
God desires His children to be spiritually stable, rooted, and mature. A believer who is planted in a godly altar, grounded in the Word of God, and faithful in prayer will grow strong in faith and experience God’s blessings. Constantly running from one altar to another out of fear, desperation, or the search for quick solutions can bring confusion and spiritual instability.
Remain connected to Jesus Christ, the true foundation of every godly altar.
Colossians 2:7
> “Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith.”
Moral Lesson
A strong tree grows because it remains rooted in one place. In the same way, a believer grows spiritually by remaining rooted in Christ, faithful in prayer, committed to God’s Word, and planted in a sound biblical fellowship. God rewards faithfulness, consistency, and obedience.
